True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America by Betsy Gaines Quammen, explores myths of the West, and how, if left unexamined, these myths distort the realities of the present and exacerbate polarizations. These misperceptions about land, politics, liberty, and self-determination threaten the wellbeing of western communities overrun by newcomers seeking a dream – and the country, unless America recognizes the dangers of building a national identity on illusion. True West is the most recent winner of the Bozeman Magazine award for Favorite Book released by a Local Author in 2023.
Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus by David Quammen is the story of the worldwide scientific quest to decipher the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, trace its source, and make possible the vaccines to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Breathless was a finalist for the 2022 National Book Award for Nonfiction. He has written for the New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, the Atlantic, National Geographic and Outside, among other publications, and is a three-time winner of the National Magazine Award.
